Cricket stopped being a sport you could be unfit and good at some time ago. Fielding standards alone have changed the requirement — the ability to sprint, stop, turn and throw repeatedly over three hours is now a selection criterion, not a bonus.
But junior cricket fitness is widely misunderstood. Young players do not get hurt from lifting weights. They get hurt from bowling too many overs, resting too little, and never learning how to land, decelerate and change direction properly.
What junior cricketers actually need
Movement quality first
Before load, before speed: can the player squat properly, lunge without the knee collapsing inward, hinge at the hip, land softly from a jump and decelerate under control? Almost every non-contact injury in youth sport traces back to one of these. This is the foundation and it takes months, not weeks.
Agility and change of direction
Cricket is a game of short, sharp, repeated efforts. Ladder work, cone drills, shuttle runs, reactive drills and short sprints with full recovery build the quality that shows up as a saved boundary. Parents whose children start structured cricket training most often report agility as the first visible change.
Age-appropriate strength
Pre-adolescent players build strength through bodyweight work — push-ups, squats, lunges, planks, hangs, crawling and medicine-ball throws. Through and after adolescence, properly coached resistance training becomes appropriate and is protective, not risky, when technique leads and load follows.
Aerobic base
Enough conditioning to be as sharp in the final over as the first. Not marathon running — repeated-effort capacity.
Mobility, especially thoracic and hip
Bowling and batting both demand rotation. Restricted hips and a stiff upper back force the lower back to compensate, which is precisely where young fast bowlers break down.
The overuse problem, and it is mostly bowling
Lower-back stress injuries in adolescent fast bowlers are the most serious preventable injury in junior cricket. The risk factors are well established: too many deliveries in a session, too many sessions in a week, insufficient rest between bowling days, a rapid spike in workload, and a mixed bowling action.
Practical protections: cap deliveries per session by age, keep at least a day between heavy bowling days, never spike volume suddenly before a tournament, check the bowling action early, and treat any persistent lower-back pain in a teenage bowler as a stop signal requiring assessment — not something to bowl through.
Heat, hydration and Indian conditions
Children thermoregulate less efficiently than adults and often will not stop to drink unless told. Schedule hydration breaks rather than offering them, train in early morning or evening slots through the hot months, use light-coloured clothing and caps, and take heat cramps seriously as an early warning.
Recovery is training
Sleep is the highest-leverage recovery intervention available to a school-age athlete, and it is the one most often sacrificed for tuition. Add at least one full rest day a week, an off-season block with reduced load, and adequate protein, iron and calcium — iron deficiency in particular is common in Indian adolescent athletes and quietly flattens performance.
A realistic weekly structure for a 13–15 year old
Two to three skill sessions, one or two conditioning sessions layered on skill days rather than added as separate days, one match, and at least one complete rest day. Bowling volume tracked and capped. Movement-quality work as part of the warm-up rather than as a separate chore.
The point
Fitness for young cricketers is not about producing the strongest fourteen-year-old. It is about producing an eighteen-year-old who is still playing, still uninjured, and still improving. Fitness work built into the coaching week — not sold as an add-on — is what makes that likely.
