Bengaluru does not lose as much cricket to rain as people think. It loses cricket to standing water — which is a completely different problem, and one decided years before the rain arrives.
Two grounds can take identical rainfall. One is playable ninety minutes after it stops. The other is unusable for three days. Neither outcome is about the weather.
Surface gradient: the cheapest thing you can get right
Water leaves a cricket ground primarily across the surface, not through it. A properly graded ground has a deliberate fall from the square outwards, so water moves away from the most valuable and most vulnerable part of the facility.
The most common defect we find on existing grounds is a square sitting fractionally lower than its surroundings — usually because the outfield was topped up over the years and nobody re-checked levels. Every rainfall then drains towards the square. It is a slow, invisible, entirely self-inflicted failure.
Subsurface drainage: when it is actually needed
Not every ground needs it. Sites with heavy clay subsoil, a high water table, or nowhere for surface water to discharge to do. Retrofitting drainage into a finished ground is disruptive and expensive, which is exactly why the site assessment matters at construction time.
Where drainage exists, it needs maintenance. Silted outlets are the most common reason a drainage system that worked in year one does nothing in year five.
Covers: protecting the square, not the ground
Covers protect the wicket and its immediate surrounds — you cannot cover an outfield. What matters:
- Deployed before rain, which means someone must own the forecast decision.
- Sized to cover run-ups as well as the strip; a saturated run-up makes a match unsafe even with a dry pitch.
- Shed water clear of the square rather than pooling it at the edge.
- Removed as soon as possible afterwards — a covered pitch sweating in Bengaluru humidity develops its own problems.
Outfield recovery
Getting back to playable quickly is about removing surface water and restoring traction. Squeegees and rollers for standing water, sand or absorbent material on persistent wet patches, and — critically — keeping heavy machinery and studded feet off a saturated outfield. Most long-term outfield damage in monsoon happens in the twelve hours after the rain, not during it.
The monsoon maintenance schedule
Pre-monsoon: verify gradients, clear and flush drainage outlets, repair low spots, service covers and check for tears, aerate the outfield to improve infiltration.
During: forecast-driven covering, prompt water removal, restricted traffic on wet surfaces, disease watch — humidity plus dense grass invites fungal problems, mowing height raised slightly.
Post-monsoon: scarify and aerate, top dress and level, repair worn areas, re-establish the rolling programme gradually, and reset the mowing height for the season.
What this is worth
For a school, playing days are curriculum. For an academy, they are the product parents paid for. For a commercial ground, they are revenue. A ground that recovers in two hours instead of two days gains dozens of playing days a year, and the investment that produces that is drainage design and disciplined maintenance — not a bigger set of covers.
